Holmehill

Holmehill, Altrincham

As part of the proposals to convert this large detached Victorian dwelling in to self contained apartments (also a DWA project), Dickinson Waugh were commissioned to assess the viability of the functional re-use of an original coach house.

This lead to the proposal to demolish the coach house and replace it with a bespoke high quality dwelling enhancing the conservation area to which it belongs.

Devisdale House

Devisdale House, Altrincham

The client for this project approached Dickinson Waugh with the idea of extending their house.

Simply bolting on an extension was not the right solution in this case and so DWA developed proposals which will give the client their required additional floor space from within the existing building footprint.

The proposal is to excavate and form a Basement; which will lead through fully glazed sliding doors out to a sunken garden.

Again, our ability to appraise the heritage values attributed to a building at an early stage combined with our talent for design have resulted in a high quality and original solution.

Dukes 92

Dukes 92, Castlefield canal basin

Client. L R Leisure
Contract Value. £500K

Dukes 92 is one of Manchester’s most successful and famous day and nigh time venues.

The brief was to update the internal decor, provide a striking food display, convert a first floor area into a multipurpose cocktail/function room with a new cantilevered balcony to overlook the canal-side terrace, along with a new glass rear entrance lobby.

The interior was addressed with a nod to Manchester’s rich industrial past. The metal bar and matching back bar displays providing a robust , then cosy seating bays and antique furniture provided both a counterpoint and comfort to a wide age group and a balance to the harder elements.

The Salutation

The Salutation, Hammersmith

Client. Fullers
Contract Value. £500K

Unusually for Fullers, with their immaculate estate, the Salutation had fallen into a rather sorry state and the brief was a difficult one, as it  lies at the wrong end of Hammersmith and had become a male-dominated big screen sports pub.

Mike was instructed to craft a solution that increased its appeal to both females and to an emerging quality 23-35 year old affluent market – but, a solution that simultaneously retained the sports element as the base for growth.

Additionally, the link to the very attractive beer garden had to be enhanced and transformed into a desirable area to settle rather than acting as a mere inhospitable corridor.

The resulting refurbishment was not only an immediate hit with the required target markets, but also drew some lavish praise from the Retail Director as a model for future similar complex solutions.

Lower Turks Head

The Lower Turks Head, Shudehill

Client. Moth Developments
Contract Value. £500K

The Lower Turks Head is one of Manchester’s oldest pubs and had been vacant for over 20 years and in a seriously dilapidated state. Additionally, being located in a recently redeveloped area of Manchester; which is currently a night life hot-spot, the pressure was on to produce a scheme which not only respected the heritage values attributed to the building, but was also capable of competing in an extremely competitive market.

DWA’s Michael Maddocks was tasked with the job, and we’re delighted to report that due to his design flare and commercial expertise, both boxes have well and truly been ticked.

The layout of this building, with its compact spaces was maximised and salvage materials were expertly reused resulting in a project that we’re very proud of.

Aldercroft

Aldercroft, Cheshire

A rural dwelling located within green belt and typically 80’s in style. The new owners not only wished to make their mark on their new home, but also increase floor space as much as possible.

Robust guidance stating an acceptable increase of 30% for such properties indicated a long and protracted planning process. Not so the case as thorough knowledge of the legislation and a well designed extension lead to an impressive overall increase of 82% and a very happy client.

Check out the ‘before’ and ‘after’ images to the right.

Cue the cliché “it’s what we do”………..

The Violet Hour

The Violet Hour, West Didsbury

Client. Libertine Bars
Contract Value. £100K

High praise and the recommendation of a former client lead this young entrepreneur to DWA’s door having procured a prime site in the heart of West Didsbury, a fashionable suburb of Manchester.

This former Butcher’s shop lay derelict for some 18 years before DWA quite literally burst through the door and set about transforming its dilapidated, floor-less shell into a stylish urbane hot spot.

Once again, DWA’s commercial artifice was exploited to the maximum and a tight budget was stretched to the limit. The result speaks for itself.
